answer

An electric flow boiler heats the water for your radiators or underfloor heating with electric elements instead of burning gas or oil, so it needs no flue or gas supply. The Advance Eglow comes in 6, 9 and 12kW, modulates its power to match demand and has an A rated pump and bypass already fitted, which keeps installation simple. It runs on a sealed heating system.

What is inside an Eglow

The Advance Appliances Eglow heats water with stainless steel 3kW heater pods: two in the 6kW model, three in the 9kW and four in the 12kW. The fitted A rated pump moves the water through the pods and round the heating circuit, and runs on briefly after the boiler stops. An automatic bypass and an auto air vent are fitted too. Advance's data sheet says all the power is converted to heat.

The boiler is fully modulating and soft switches on start-up, which the installation guide says extends the life of the heat exchangers and reduces the load on the household electricity supply. A pressure switch stops it running dry, and there are two levels of overheat protection.

Radiators or underfloor

Model Output Flow temperature Current rating Protection
EG 6 / EG 6-U 6kW 80°C / 60°C 30 amps 32 amps
EG 9 / EG 9-U 9kW 80°C / 60°C 40 amps 45 amps
EG 12 / EG 12-U 12kW 80°C / 60°C 50 amps 63 amps

The EG models are for radiators at 80°C flow and the EG-U models are for underfloor heating at 60°C. All run on a single phase 240V supply. The guide asks for a double pole RCD and says the full house loading must be considered when working out the supply. For comparison, Advance notes that the average house has a 100 amp supply.

Controls

The Eglow is switched by a standard programmer and room thermostat (not supplied) through a voltage free connection in the casing. These controls are needed to meet Part L of the Building Regulations. Advance suggests a room thermostat setting of around 20°C, in a room where a radiator is locked open, such as a hallway. The system needs a locked open radiator or towel rail, and thermostatic radiator valves are recommended.

Hot water

On its own, the Eglow heats the central heating. To heat an indirect cylinder as well, allow an extra 3kW and use a Y, W or S plan, with a separate supply for the motorised valve. Advance recommends an independent electric or solar cylinder for hot water. For heating and mains pressure hot water in one unit, it makes the ECO ECB 210 electric combi.

Fitting and care

The Eglow measures 510 x 400 x 167mm and weighs 15kg. It mounts upright with front access, inside the main envelope of the building and never outside. It must go on a sealed system; the sealed system kit includes an 8 litre expansion vessel, although systems holding a lot of water may need a larger one. It needs no maintenance in ordinary use and carries a 2 year guarantee.

key takeaways
  • An electric flow boiler heats central heating water with electric elements, so it needs no flue or gas supply.
  • The Eglow uses stainless steel 3kW heater pods and has a pump, bypass and air vent fitted.
  • EG models run radiators at 80°C flow; EG-U models run underfloor heating at 60°C.
  • The 6, 9 and 12kW models draw 30, 40 and 50 amps on a single phase supply.
  • It needs a sealed system, a programmer and room thermostat, and carries a 2 year guarantee.
